Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Why East Los Angeles Homeowners Choose Gelco Chimney Cleaning
We provide independent Gelco service in East Los Angeles, and our work is built around the specific ways these factory-built fireplaces fail in this housing stock. Most of the Gelco boxes we see in East LA are original builder-grade open-hearth units from the 1980s and 1990s, and the recurring issues are cracked refractory panels, seized dampers, and rusted cap components. Hickory Chimney Sweep is not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by Gelco. We are an independent chimney and dryer vent service company, and that independence means we tell you what actually needs fixing, not what’s easiest to sell. Call (855) 554-2841 for an honest assessment.
Why Trust Hickory Chimney Sweep for Your Gelco Chimney Cleaning?
Ruben Acosta, our owner, has spent more than two decades sweeping and inspecting chimneys across East Los Angeles and the surrounding neighborhoods. He grew up a few blocks from Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights, studied HVAC and mechanical fundamentals at East Los Angeles College, and has worked on enough Gelco fireplaces in this area to know their flue geometry, damper hardware, and refractory panel behavior without guessing. When we open a Gelco firebox in an East LA bungalow, we know what we’re looking at before the flashlight hits the smoke shelf.
We work with Gelco fireplaces the way a forklift mechanic works on one brand of lift: we know the parts, the weak points, and the service intervals. We use OEM Gelco dampers, refractory panels, and cap components when they’re available, and we source quality aftermarket equivalents when OEM parts are discontinued or backordered. We always tell you which you’re getting, and we never pass off a generic part as factory. Our service approach is warranty-safe and honest. We document what we find and show you before we recommend anything.
Ruben’s line on this is simple: “Tell me what the flue looks like and I’ll tell you what your winter looks like.” That’s how we’ve always worked, and it’s why East Los Angeles homeowners keep our number on the fridge.

Common Gelco Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in East Los Angeles
Older Gelco factory-built fireplaces are common in East LA homes, and most of them share the same short list of failure points. Here’s what we actually see:
- Cracked or spalling refractory brick panels. The refractory panels inside a Gelco firebox are the fire’s first line of defense. After 20 or 30 years of heat cycling, they crack, chip, and start to spall. Once a panel loses its face, heat reaches the steel cabinet behind it. In an East Los Angeles home where the fireplace gets used hard for a few weeks each winter, this is the number one Gelco problem we diagnose. The fix is panel replacement, and we carry or order direct-fit panels for most Gelco model lines.
- Seized or snapped damper pivot pins and handles. The damper on a Gelco open-hearth box is a simple steel plate on a pivot. Creosote and dust accumulate on the pin, the handle gets sticky, and eventually the homeowner forces it until it snaps. We free up salvageable dampers and replace broken ones with OEM Gelco parts when they’re available. This is a small repair that completely changes how the fireplace draws.
- Rusted mesh spark screens and warped glass-door gaskets on Gelco inserts. Gelco inserts with glass doors and mesh screens live in a hot, dusty environment. The mesh rusts, the gasket rope around the glass door flattens and warps, and the door no longer seals. The result is smoke migration into the room and poor draft. We replace gaskets, re-screen doors, and re-align the glass frame so the unit burns clean.
- Loose or missing rain caps and degraded flashing on Gelco factory flues. East LA gets very little rain, but when it does rain, an open Gelco flue lets water straight into the chase. Most of the water damage we see in this area started with a missing or rusted rain cap. We install Gelco and aftermarket cap components, reseal flashings, and check the chase top for rust-through. A cap is cheap. A rusted firebox is not.
- Heavy glazed creosote on the smoke shelf. This is the one that surprises people. Gelco open-hearth fireplaces were built as decorating pieces more than heating appliances. When a homeowner in an East LA bungalow starts burning seasoned hardwood every night for a month, the flue cools quickly because these chimneys were built shallow and wide. That cooling makes creosote glaze on the smoke shelf and flue walls. We remove it mechanically with wire brushes and rotary tools, and we show homeowners photos of what came out.
Gelco Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
We’ve pulled enough Gelco fireboxes apart to know which parts are worth replacing and which ones mean the unit is done. Refractory panels, damper assemblies, gaskets, mesh screens, and cap components are all serviceable. We use OEM Gelco parts when they’re available because they fit correctly and preserve the unit’s safety rating. When Gelco parts are discontinued, we source quality aftermarket equivalents that meet the same dimensional and material specs. We tell you which you’re getting before we install anything.
The harder call is when a Gelco box has multiple cracked panels, a rusted steel cabinet, and a damper that’s snapped off at the pivot. At that point, the repair may cost more than a careful replacement. We’ll show you the damage on camera and give you straight numbers for both paths. No scare tactics, no pressure. If the unit can safely run another five years with a panel replacement and a good sweep, we’ll tell you that instead of pitching a new insert. Call (855) 554-2841 and we’ll give you the same straight answer in person.
Our Gelco Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Visual inspection and camera scan. We start by looking at the firebox, the damper, the flue, the cap, and the chase. We run a camera up the flue to check for cracked tiles, creosote buildup, and blockages. For older Gelco units in East Los Angeles, we’re checking specifically for refractory panel cracks and damper pivot wear.
- 2
Creosote removal and flue cleaning. We sweep the flue with brushes, rods, and rotary tools sized to the Gelco flue dimensions. We also clean the smoke shelf, which is where glazed creosote collects in these units.
- 3
Repair or part replacement. If the damper is seized, the gasket is warped, or the refractory panels are cracked, we replace the parts on the same visit when we have them in the truck or local stock. If parts need to be ordered, we book the follow-up before we leave.
- 4
Draft test and cap check. We verify the fireplace draws correctly, check the cap and flashing, and make sure the firebox is safe to operate. We also check the glass door seal on inserts so the burn is clean and the smoke stays out of the room.
- 5
Photo report and warranty documentation. You get pictures of what we found, what we did, and what the unit looks like when we’re done. That’s your record for insurance and any Gelco warranty questions down the line.

AfterGelco Products We Service & Install in East Los Angeles
Hickory Chimney Sweep works on the full range of Gelco products found in East LA homes. We service Gelco wood-burning factory-built fireplaces of all vintages, including the builder-grade open-hearth boxes common in 1980s and 1990s construction. We handle Gelco gas fireplace inserts with glass doors and mesh screens, along with the venting components, round or multi-flue caps, and chase tops that go with them. We keep replacement dampers, refractory panels, gaskets, and cap components in local stock for fast turnarounds on the most common Gelco models. When parts aren’t in the truck, we can usually have them within a few days and finish the job the week we start.
We Also Service These Brands
Gelco is one of the brands we work with most often in Commerce and East Los Angeles, but it’s not the only one. We also service and install DuraFlex flexible liner systems and HeatShield resurfacing for damaged flue liners. That multi-brand experience means we’re comparing your Gelco unit against what else is on the market, not just selling you what we happen to carry.
FAQs – Gelco Chimney Cleaning Service in East Los Angeles
Yes, in most cases. We source OEM Gelco dampers, refractory panels, and cap components when they’re available, and we have access to aftermarket equivalents that match the original specs. If a part is truly obsolete, we’ll tell you and work through replacement options with you. Call (855) 554-2841 with your model number and we’ll check availability before scheduling.
It can be. The smell is usually dust burning off the heat exchanger or a partially blocked vent, but if the flue is restricted or the unit hasn’t been swept in years, the odor lingers longer and the unit runs hotter than it should. We inspect the vent, clean the flue, and check the glass seal so the insert fires clean. If the smell continues after a full sweep and vent check, you’ll know it’s not a chimney issue and can address the unit itself.
In East Los Angeles, the most common causes on Gelco boxes are a seized or partially closed damper, a warped glass-door gasket, a cold flue, or a flue that’s restricted with creosote and dust from a long dry spell. We check the damper first, then the gasket, then the flue. Most of these are fixable on the same visit, and the difference in draft is immediate. Call (855) 554-2841 for a chimney inspection and cleaning.
Yes, and it happens more than homeowners realize. The usual entry points are a missing rain cap, rusted flashing, or a cracked chase top. Water drips down the flue and settles in the steel firebox cabinet, where it rusts through from the inside. We repair the water entry point and assess the firebox for structural damage. It’s usually far cheaper to fix a cap than to rebuild a rusted steel cabinet. Call (855) 554-2841 for a chimney inspection and we’ll show you exactly what we find.
For a Gelco open-hearth fireplace used regularly during the winter, once a year is the right interval. East LA’s dry, dusty air and winter inversion burns mean these chimneys accumulate creosote and soot faster than most homeowners assume. If you burn green wood or use the fireplace daily, you may need a mid-season sweep. A camera inspection tells us exactly where you stand. Call (855) 554-2841 and we’ll get you on the schedule.
A standard Montebello Gelco service or East Los Angeles chimney sweep typically runs between $180 and $340, depending on the flue condition, the amount of creosote, and whether we’re also doing a Level 2 inspection or replacing a damper or gasket at the same visit. We quote a flat price before we start, so there are no surprises on the invoice. Call (855) 554-2841 for a free estimate based on your Gelco model and what we find on the roof.
